Friday 12 January

Welcome Reception

Our first chance to meet one another will be at our welcome drinks reception, generously hosted by local alumni. If you're arriving in Hong Kong early, then join us in the evening for a relaxed start to the weekend.

Saturday 13 January

Opening Lectures and Lunch - British Consulate

The main part of our weekend programme begins at the British Consulate where we will be welcomed by Dr Michael Banner (Dean, Fellow, and Chair of Alumni Relations & Development) over light refreshments from 10.30am.

The Master, Professor Dame Sally Davies GCB DBE FRS FMedSci will deliver the opening talk (11am) on the next big challenge in healthcare - anti-microbial resistance (AMR). Dame Sally is the UK Special Envoy on AMR and co-convenor of the UN Inter-Agency Coordination Group on AMR.

A fusion food lunch will be served with time to connect with other attendees (12 midday)

Nobel-Prize winning Trinity Fellow, Professor Didier Queloz FRS, will deliver our second talk on his work as Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe (1pm)

The Hong Kong Peak Tramway (optional)

If this is your first visit to Hong Kong, or you want to see the city from a different perspective, then join us for a trip on the Peak Tramway - a funicular railway that is the best way to travel to the upper levels of Hong Kong Island.

If you'd rather explore other areas of what Hong Kong has to offer, then this is free time to do so before we reconvene for our evening programme (2-5pm).

Drinks Reception & Gala Dinner

Meeting at The Rosewood Hotel (Kowloon), a Drinks Reception will precede our very special Trinity-themed Gala Dinner. We will as much of the tradition of a Trinity Feast to Hong Kong, with a Trinity-inspired 4-course menu to match. As with all Trinity Dinners, this will be a black tie event (from 7pm)

Hong Kong Skyline at Night (optional)

For those who want to keep experiencing more of Hong Kong, we will take the short walk from The Rosewood to the waterfront to take in the lights, atmosphere and colour of this beautiful city at night.

Sunday 14 January

Breakfast & Talk by Mr Richard Turnill (Senior Bursar)

We will come together for Breakfast, over which Trinity's Senior Bursar, Mr Richard Turnill will discuss what it takes to manage the finances and investment portfolio of Trinity, the challenges and opportunities for the College's future development, and how Trinity fits into the wider Cambridge ecosystem. (9am at The Rosewood)

Guided tour of the Palace Museum (optional)

For those who wish to explore some of Hong Kong's culture, we will be taking guided tours of the Palace Museum (circa 1pm, tbc) - one of the most highly-rated attractions in Hong Kong. Places on this are limited.

Speaker Biographies

Professor Dame Sally Davies
GCB DBE FRS FMedSci

Dame Sally Davies, 40th Master of Trinity College, was appointed as the UK Government’s Special Envoy on Anti-Microbial Research (AMR) in 2019.

Former Chief Medical Officer for England, and Senior Medical Advisor to the UK Government from 2011-2019, Dame Sally is a leading figure in global health. In November 2020, she was announced as a member of the new UN Global Leaders Group on AMR, serving alongside Heads of State, Ministers, and prominent figures from around the world to advocate for action on AMR.

Dame Sally’s annual Chief Medical Officer report on infectious diseases, in 2013, first highlighted the scale and complexity of AMR as a public health threat. This report underlined the impact of AMR on clinicians and spurred Dame Sally on to bridge the research and policy gap – speaking nationally and globally on the subject. She has since secured funding for the UK to pioneer data-driven surveillance in 24 countries across Africa and Southeast Asia, which is contributing to global understanding of and action on AMR.

In the 2020 New Year Honours, Dame Sally became the second woman (and the first outside the Royal family) to be appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB) for services to public health and research, having received her DBE in 2009.

Professor Didier Queloz FRS

Didier Queloz is Professor of Physics at the Cavendish Laboratory and Geneva University, and a Fellow of Trinity. He is at the forefront of the exoplanet revolution in astrophysics and received the Physics Nobel Prize in 2019.

Directing his efforts to the detection of Earth like planets and life in the universe, he leads a comprehensive research program which focusses on furthering our understanding of the formation, structure, and habitability of exoplanets in the universe. He also works to promote and share the excitement of this work with the public.

In the course of his career, Didier has developed astronomical equipment, new observational approaches, and detection algorithms. He has participated in and conducted programs leading to the detection of hundreds of planets.

In addition to his research and teaching activities, he participates in numerous documentaries, movies, articles, TV, and radio interviews, to share excitement and to promote interest for science in general, particularly topics about exoplanets and life in the Universe.

Mr Richard Turnill

Richard joined Trinity on 1 September 2020. After studying Economics at Churchill, 1988-1991, Mr Turnill joined the Bank of England and went on to become the Global Chief Investment Strategist of BlackRock.

As well as managing the College’s investments and developing financial policy, the Senior Bursar plays an active role in Trinity’s governance, through weekly Council meetings and by contributing to decision-making that will impact the College community in the immediate and longer term.

Trinity’s Senior Bursar also participates in University committees, leads initiatives in support of education and research, and directs Trinity’s collaborations, including, for example, support of the Newton Trust, University lectureships, PhD studentships and the Colleges Fund that helps less well-endowed Colleges.

Dr Michael Banner

Michael Banner has been Dean, Fellow and Director of Studies in Theology and Religious Studies at Trinity College since 2006. He is also the Chair of Alumni Relations and Development, responsible for the College's engagement with alumni and for our development programme.

He was previously Professor of Ethics and Public Policy in Life Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, and from 1994 to 2004 F.D. Maurice Professor of Moral and Social Theology, King’s College, London.

His most recent book was published in 2014 entitled The Ethics of Everyday Life: Moral Theology, Social Anthropology and the Imagination of the Human. He is currently writing a book which attempts to chart and understand Trinity College’s entanglement with trans-Atlantic enslavement and its legacies.

Michael has served on a number of committees, including chairing a Committee of Enquiry for the Ministry of Agriculture (1993-95), and the Home Office’s Animal Procedures Committee from 1998 to 2006. He also served as a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution for six years, and on the Ministry of Defence’s Advisory Committee on Less Lethal Weapons from 2012 to 2021.

By way of light relief, Michael is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day. He has two children under ten, and a puppy, and is generally short of free time.

A. Of course, guests are most welcome. You can bring up to 3 guests.

Q. Do you have any age restrictions? Can I bring my children?
A. Unfortunately, this event is not suitable for under-18s. Depending on space, it may be possible for 16- and 17-year olds to join some of the academic talks. Please check with the Alumni Relations & Development team.

Q. What does the ticket include?
A. Each purchased ticket includes: Attendance, refreshments and lunch at British Consulate on Saturday - Return journey on the Peak Tramway (optional) - Drinks Reception and Gala Dinner - Breakfast and talks on Sunday morning - Visit to the Palace Museum (optional and limited tickets). Attendance at Friday evening reception is also included, but this is optional and spaces may be limited, we will prioritize those travelling from outside of Hong Kong to join us that evening if we need to operate a waiting list.

Q. I'm travelling from outside of Hong Kong - where should I stay?
A. Unfortunately, we do not have any special rate deals with any of the hotels for this event. Much of the programme is taking place at The Rosewood, but there are a variety of hotels nearby at different budgets. These include:
